Kenyan rapper King Kaka has revealed that he and his family reached a point of desperation during his near-fatal illness that they began praying for a specific disease diagnosis, as long as it was not cancer.
Speaking about the ordeal, the artist said the uncertainty surrounding his condition was more distressing than a confirmed diagnosis. After multiple hospital visits and tests that returned negative results, doctors struggled to determine what was wrong, even as his health rapidly deteriorated.
King Kaka explained that the illness began with a severe sore throat shortly after returning from a family holiday. Though the initial symptoms eased, they returned weeks later, accompanied by alarming changes including loss of taste, persistent coughing, night sweats, and rapid weight loss.
As his condition worsened, his weight dropped significantly, at one point falling from about 85 kilograms to the high 60s. The singer said the situation became more frightening because the symptoms persisted despite medication, and repeated tests for conditions such as HIV and tuberculosis came back negative.
“At some point we got desperate to the point that we prayed to have a certain disease but not cancer,” he said, describing the mental strain of not knowing what he was fighting.
Medical confusion surrounding his condition was later linked to a misdiagnosis that led to incorrect treatment, further worsening his health. He would eventually spend months in and out of hospital as doctors tried to narrow down the cause, with possibilities including severe infections such as sepsis or other blood-related conditions.
During the peak of the illness, King Kaka said he could barely recognise himself due to the drastic physical changes. The experience pushed him to confront the reality of death, with moments of hallucination and mental exhaustion adding to the crisis.
At one stage, doctors reportedly gave him 30 days to live, underscoring the severity of his condition.
Despite the grim outlook, the rapper credits his recovery to persistent medical care, family support, and faith. His wife, Nana Owiti, remained by his side throughout the ordeal, supporting him during hospital stays and helping him maintain mental strength.
After months of treatment, his condition gradually improved, and he began regaining weight and strength. He has since described being able to eat, walk, and resume normal life as a significant milestone after a period he once believed he might not survive.
King Kaka has continued to speak publicly about the experience, urging people to value their health after surviving a condition that left doctors uncertain and his family fearing the worst.
