Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has strongly criticised Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja following shocking revelations that hired goons were paid as little as Ksh50 to disrupt peaceful protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
In an explosive exposé aired by Citizen TV, several youths confessed on camera to being mobilised and paid by an influential individual to infiltrate and destabilise the demonstrations held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Some of the goons lamented that despite being promised money, they were duped and ended up with nothing.
Reacting to the disturbing claims on Saturday, June 21, Owino directly accused Governor Sakaja of betrayal, alleging that the county leadership orchestrated the chaos that saw hawkers harassed and young protesters brutalised.
“Governor Sakaja, Nairobi did not elect you to unleash goons on its people. You promised leadership. You spoke of change. But what we’re seeing is betrayal,” said Owino.
He painted a grim picture of a county administration that is using intimidation and violence to silence dissent, stating that the governor has abandoned his leadership promises and instead resorted to fear tactics.
His remarks came amid circulating allegations that Governor Sakaja was behind the mobilisation of the goons who wreaked havoc during the protests.
In response, Governor Sakaja dismissed the claims as fabrications, stating he was not even in Nairobi during the alleged mobilisation.
