Nairobi, Monday, July 7, 2025 – Panic and confusion rocked Muthaiga this evening after multiple Subaru vehicles carrying armed civilians were spotted outside the residence of Safina party leader Jimi Wanjigi.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicles arrived in quick succession and parked strategically near the gate and along the road leading to Wanjigi’s compound. The armed individuals, dressed in plain clothes, did not identify themselves but appeared to be on high alert.
Sources say Wanjigi was hosting a private political gathering attended by key opposition figures, including ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
The motive behind the sudden presence of these armed civilians remains unclear, with no official statement from police or government agencies at the time of reporting.
“They were not in uniform, but you could see they were armed. Some had walkie-talkies. It was like a covert operation,” said a witness who asked not to be named.
This incident comes at a time of heightened political tension in the country, with opposition leaders ramping up criticism against President Ruto’s administration and calls for accountability gaining momentum following recent youth-led demonstrations.
Jimi Wanjigi, a known critic of the government and frequent target of state surveillance, has faced similar disruptions in the past. However, today’s event involving armed civilians not uniformed police has raised eyebrows and sparked fears of intimidation tactics being employed against opposition leaders.
The development has sparked outrage online, with Kenyans demanding answers over the growing presence of unidentified armed groups in civilian spaces.
“If these aren’t police, then who are they and who sent them? This is not just intimidation—this is a threat to democracy,” one X user posted.
Awaiting Official Word
Police have yet to confirm whether the armed individuals were acting on official orders. Safina party and Wanjigi’s team are expected to address the media shortly.
