Kenyan musician Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has shared details about a past incident involving her former foreign boyfriend whom she referred to as Omosh.
The singer used the experience to caution Kenyans to look out for each other’s wellbeing and be vigilant in relationships.
Her warning comes in the wake of the recent case involving Dutch national Elwin Ter Horst, who was arrested in Diani, Kwale County after allegedly assaulting his Kenyan girlfriend and later blamed his behaviour on a psychotic episode.
In her message, Akothee said there is a reason she shared her story. She noted that while it may sound funny, there is a lesson to be learned.
According to her, just as people normalise HIV testing before marriage, couples should also normalise disclosing other hidden illnesses that aren’t detected in blood tests — especially mental health issues.
She added that many people walk around unwell without even realising it. Akothee warned that if you start asking yourself why someone is behaving a certain way, you should not ignore it because if you let it slide, it could cost you dearly.
Reflecting on her experience with Omosh, she said: “Meeting Omosh shocked me, but also educated me a lot.” She described how some people may hide serious problems behind packaged love, making it hard to notice the red flags until chaos erupts.
Akothee also revealed an incident where Omosh once ordered maize from other people, but refused to pay, forcing her to handle the situation herself. She said the drama taught her painful lessons about love and deception.
Akothee also shared that during that relationship,Omosh allegedly started a pig rearing business, she neglected her music career and focused on raising pigs instead of recording in the studio — a move she now considers embarrassing but insightful.
