Fondly known to South Africans as Madiba, Mandela spent 27 years in prison, before leading his country from white minority rule to a multi racial democracy.
In defiance of royal protocol, the late Mandela had a “warm friendship” with Queen and called her by her first name.
According to his former personal aide Zelda la Grange, the former president of South Africa felt at ease enough to comment about Elizabeth II’s weight.
Nelson Mandela also gave Queen Elizabeth II special name “Motlalepula” out of respect and affection. The nickname means “come with the rain”.
Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history, died aged 96 in her Scottish summer residence aged 96.
