Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics for over three decades, has made his mark beyond the political arena. While he has served in various high-profile positions, including Vice President and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kalonzo has also ventured into business, with notable investments including the Mwingi Cottages Hotel in Ukambani.
The Mwingi Cottages Hotel, a multi-million property, was relaunched in December 2022 after being closed for nearly 11 years. The hotel initially shut down in 2011 when a section of it was marked for demolition by a Chinese company to facilitate the tarmacking of the Mwingi-Kyuso-Tseikuru road.
The hotel’s conference hall, laundry, and gate were all marked for demolition as they stood on a road reserve. This setback led to the hotel’s prolonged closure, but extensive renovations in 2022 brought the facility back to life.
The revamped hotel, which reopened in January 2023, now boasts an array of new features, including a swimming pool, a café, and spacious rooms equipped with modern fixtures. During the pre-launch event, Kalonzo praised the management team on Twitter, stating: “Congratulations, It was an honour to join in the pre-launch event of Mwingi Cottages Resort. Superb ambience, incredible company and I got up to try out a few new dance moves. I wish the Management and Staff all the best in the coming seasons.”
Kalonzo’s investment in the Mwingi Cottages Hotel is just one of his many assets. Beyond the hotel, he owns a 200-acre property in Yatta, six vehicles, and a mansion valued at approximately Ksh800 million in Nairobi’s upscale Karen neighborhood. His real estate portfolio also includes several apartments in Nairobi, showcasing his diverse investment approach beyond his political career.
