Prison Nakuru

For many years, a Nairobi mother has lived with the consequences of a decision she once thought was harmless. Peris, widely known as Mama Sharon, is currently serving a 30-year sentence at Eldoret Women’s Prison after being found guilty of failing to report a serious crime.

Her story is one of regret, reflection, and the lasting impact of choices made in difficult moments. According to her account, life was not always this way. Peris grew up in a strict and religious family where discipline and faith guided her early years.

However, things began to change when she moved to Nairobi in search of better opportunities. It was during this time that she formed new friendships that would later influence her life in ways she never expected. She recalls becoming close to a friend identified as Eleanor.

Over time, trust grew, and Peris supported her friend financially. She even allowed her to use her car, believing she was helping someone in need. But behind the scenes, there was more going on than she realized. Authorities later established that Peris had knowledge of a planned crime but did not report it.

That single decision led to her arrest and eventual conviction in 2009 on charges related to conspiracy. Initially, she was handed a life sentence. However, after an appeal, the court reduced her term to 30 years. Now, after spending over 17 years in prison, Peris continues to reflect on her past. If all goes as planned, she is expected to regain her freedom in 2030.

Speaking about her experience, she admits that the people she surrounded herself with played a big role in her downfall. Her message to others is simple but powerful: choose your friends wisely. Life in prison has given her time to think deeply about her journey.

She has had to come to terms with the years lost and the moments she missed, including raising her child. Despite the challenges, she is trying to rebuild her sense of purpose while serving her sentence. Her story stands as a reminder that even small decisions can have serious consequences.

It also highlights the importance of responsibility and awareness in everyday life. As she continues her time behind bars, Peris hopes others can learn from her experience and avoid similar paths.
