Former NFL star and American pastor Rickey Allen Bolden has called on Kenyan leaders, including President William Ruto, to apologise to Gen Z over alleged kidnappings, enforced disappearances, and killings that occurred during last year’s protests. Speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast on Wednesday, May 28, Bolden emphasized the importance of mending the strained relationship between the country’s youth and political leaders.

“I pray that leaders would apologise to Gen Z for the detainment and shutting down of the internet. They respect you, but they don’t feel respected,” Bolden said, highlighting the emotional toll of the government’s response to the demonstrations.

He specifically urged leaders from all political sides to seek forgiveness and begin building bridges with Kenya’s youth. Referring to the Finance Bill protests, he noted the trauma experienced by many young people, calling an apology not just necessary, but healing.
