A devastating fire in Nairobi’s Kibera settlement has claimed the lives of an entire family, casting a dark shadow over both their local community and their rural home in Vihiga County.
Mr. Ernest Ombima, his wife Flora Ambani, and their three children — nine-year-old Getrude Amisi, three-year-old Silas Omboko, and toddler Stephen Ayimbo — tragically perished in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 24, when flames engulfed their home in the Makina area.
Originally from Esirulo Village in Emuhaya Constituency, the family had moved to Nairobi seeking a better life. Instead, they were met with unspeakable tragedy. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the scale of the devastation has reignited calls for improved disaster preparedness, especially in informal settlements where emergency response is often delayed and housing structures are highly vulnerable.
In an emotional statement, Emuhaya MP Hon. Omboko Milemba mourned the loss, describing Ernest as a hardworking father, Flora as a loving and gentle mother, and their children as bright lights extinguished far too soon. He called the tragedy a “national disaster” and urged the government to prioritize safety and dignity for all Kenyans, regardless of economic background.
Efforts are underway to repatriate the bodies to Vihiga for burial. Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross has reported that at least eight people died and 20 others were injured in the fire, with counseling services now being offered to affected families.
Candlelight vigils are expected in both Kibera and Emuhaya, as Kenyans come together to grieve and reflect. As MP Milemba poignantly stated, “May their memory haunt our conscience until we build a country that protects its people.”
May Ernest, Flora, Getrude, Silas, and Stephen rest in eternal peace.
