Housing Projects

President William Ruto started a big project to build cheap houses for many people. But now, some experts are saying the project is not going well.

These experts are architects, people who know how to design and build good houses. Their group is called the Architectural Association of Kenya. The leader is Mr. George Ndege. He says the government is only thinking about money and builders, not about the people who know how to plan good houses.

Mr. George says the government is putting more focus on getting money and paying contractors to build, but they forget to ask architects and planners for advice.Because of this, many houses are not strong or good quality.

Some projects have stopped in the middle, and very few houses have been finished. Only one percent of the houses promised have been built. This is a very small number and not enough for the people who need homes.

The experts say the government should listen more to architects and planners from the start. This will help make sure the houses are good, strong, and cheap for people. Also, they say the government should not fix one price for all houses. Many Kenyan families do not have much money to pay at once. The government should let people pay little by little depending on how much money they make.

Another expert, Professor Alfred Omenya, warns that if the problems are not fixed, the project may fail. He talks about South Africa where people who got cheap houses had to sell or rent them because the houses had no water, no electricity, and people had no jobs or money for food. This made the houses useless for them.

Professor Omenya also says new homeowners need to learn how to take care of their houses and pay bills. Without this, many families might lose their homes.

The experts ask the government to form a special team of experts to plan and build the houses well. This will help poor people get strong, safe, and good homes that last a long time.
