Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has sparked controversy after claiming that a loss in the 2027 general elections could result in permanent imprisonment for key leaders allied to the current administration. Speaking at a public event over the weekend, the outspoken MP said the stakes are too high for the Kenya Kwanza leadership to take the next election lightly.
“If we lose in 2027, they will jail us permanently,” Sudi said, referring to perceived political opponents. His remarks, delivered in Swahili and widely shared on social media, have stirred public debate and drawn criticism from opposition leaders and civil society groups.
Sudi, known for his fiery and unfiltered speeches, did not specify who he believed might be behind such alleged plans, but his comments were widely interpreted as an expression of fear over potential political retribution should the current government be voted out.
Critics were quick to respond, accusing the MP of fear-mongering and attempting to rally political support through scare tactics. “No one is above the law, and accountability should not be feared by any public servant,” said a statement from a leading governance watchdog.
Others have questioned the legality and ethics of Sudi’s remarks, suggesting they reveal deeper anxieties within the ruling coalition about ongoing investigations and unresolved cases involving corruption and abuse of office.
Despite the backlash, Sudi’s supporters defended his statement as a call to unity and vigilance ahead of the next election cycle. They argue that past regimes have indeed pursued political opponents under the guise of justice.
As the political climate heats up ahead of 2027, Sudi’s comments have added fuel to an already tense atmosphere — highlighting just how high the stakes could be in Kenya’s next electoral showdown.
