Gospel singer Ringtone Apoko, whose real name is Alex Nyachonga Apoko, has been taken to court over a land fraud case involving Ksh 50 million. He appeared at the Milimani Law Courts on Thursday alongside his co-accused, Alfred Juma Ayora.
The two are accused of tricking a businesswoman named Terresia Adhiambo into giving up a piece of land in the Karen area of Nairobi. The land, known as parcel number NAIROBI/BLOCK 99/142, is about 0.1908 hectares in size and is valued at Ksh 50 million.
The court heard that on or before February 28, 2023, Ringtone and Ayora claimed they owned the land because they had lived on it for over 20 years. However, the businesswoman says this is not true. The two men are also accused of forging documents and lying in a legal statement, or affidavit, in front of a lawyer.
According to the court, they swore the false affidavit in Nairobi on February 28, 2023, stating that Ringtone had been living on the land for two decades — a claim that was known to be false.
Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego refused to release Ringtone on bail for now. The court will decide on his bail application on Monday.
Ringtone is well-known in Kenya not only for his music but also for his controversial behavior and statements in public. This court case has drawn a lot of attention from his fans and critics alike.
