In a shocking move, the Nairobi County Health Committee has directed the immediate closure of all Naivas Supermarket branches within the city.

The directive comes after reports revealed that the supermarket chain had been selling expired goods to unsuspecting customers.

The committee, which is responsible for monitoring public health and safety standards, conducted a series of inspections across multiple Naivas outlets in Nairobi.

These inspections revealed numerous violations of food safety regulations, with several products past their expiry dates being found on the shelves.

“We have been closely monitoring the situation, and, unfortunately, we found expired goods being sold to the public,” said a senior official from the Nairobi County Health Committee.

“This is a serious issue as it puts the health of consumers at risk, and immediate action is required.”

The expired products included perishable items such as dairy products, packaged meats, and ready-to-eat meals, which are particularly dangerous when consumed beyond their shelf life.

Health experts warn that consuming expired food can lead to foodborne illnesses, which can range from mild stomach discomfort to more serious health conditions.

The shutdown order has caused a stir among Nairobi residents, especially those who regularly shop at Naivas due to its convenient locations and reputation for providing affordable goods.

Some customers expressed disappointment and concern about how the supermarket chain allowed such products to be sold.

“I’ve always trusted Naivas for its quality and convenience, but hearing that they were selling expired goods is alarming,” said one concerned shopper. “It’s important that they address this issue and regain the trust of their customers.”

In response to the closure, Naivas Supermarket issued a statement expressing regret over the incident and assuring the public that they are taking the matter seriously.

The supermarket chain promised to cooperate fully with health authorities and work to improve its food safety practices moving forward.

“We apologize to our customers for this unfortunate incident.

The health and safety of our customers is our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring that this does not happen again,” Naivas said in the statement.
