On May 8, 2025, a fierce firefight broke out in Garissa when Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) confronted Al-Shabaab terrorists planting IEDs along the Dadaab-Hagadera road, a notorious hotspot for attacks targeting civilians and security forces.

Acting on local tip-offs, the SOG tracked four suspects, leading to a deadly exchange of fire. One terrorist was neutralized, while three others, injured, fled the scene, resulting in an ongoing manhunt in the region.

The operation yielded a chilling haul: a PKM machine gun capable of firing 250 rounds per minute, an AK-47 rifle, a Glock 19 pistol, a communication radio, and an IED remote control, clearly painting the picture of the group’s deadly intent.

The military and the police have praised the community’s crucial role in sharing timely intelligence, a cornerstone of recent successful counter-terrorism missions in the area.

This is not the first time al-Shabaab terrorists have crossed into the country with evil missions of harming our forces and ordinary civilians.
