A woman died tragically in Githurai after a matatu heading to Thika from Nairobi’s city center collided with a motorcycle she was riding on. The incident occurred near the busy Githurai junction, an area notorious for congestion and reckless driving.
According to eyewitnesses, the matatu struck the boda boda, which was carrying the woman and several items, including goat heads. The motorcyclist fell from the impact, but the woman was thrown under the matatu, which then ran over her.
John Kariuki, a resident who spoke to Inooro TV, described the chaotic scene. “The motorcyclist fell, but the woman was trapped underneath. We lifted the matatu and pulled her out, but she appeared to have died already,” he said.
Locals who witnessed the accident were quick to intervene, lifting the vehicle in a desperate attempt to save her. Unfortunately, their efforts came too late, as the woman showed no signs of life when pulled out from beneath the wreckage.
The boda boda rider survived but sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition remains unknown.
Police officers arrived shortly after the incident to manage the crowd, secure the scene, and begin investigations. The body of the deceased was taken to a local morgue as officers started questioning witnesses and collecting evidence.
Authorities are now working to establish the exact cause of the accident. It’s not yet clear whether the matatu driver lost control, was speeding, or failed to notice the motorcycle in time.
Residents expressed frustration, noting that accidents are frequent in that area. Many blamed reckless matatu drivers and poor traffic enforcement by authorities.
Some locals called for immediate intervention, including installing speed bumps, improved signage, and better enforcement to protect pedestrians and motorcyclists.
The matatu has since been impounded, and the driver taken in for questioning.
Police have assured the public that a full investigation is underway and any responsible parties will be held accountable.
As of now, the identity of the deceased woman has not been released pending notification of her family.
