Rangwe Member of Parliament Lilian Achieng’ Gogo has suggested that political rivalry in Homa Bay County may have contributed to the recent murder of former Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.
Speaking in an emotional interview, Gogo — who is also a sister-in-law to the late legislator — claimed that Were had been receiving threats prior to his death and had even raised the alarm with law enforcement agencies.
The former MP was shot dead near the City Mortuary roundabout on Ngong Road in what police believe was a targeted attack.
Gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle, yet neither the driver nor another passenger was harmed. This has raised further suspicion that the killing was carefully planned and specifically aimed at Ong’ondo.
According to Gogo, the murder reflects a disturbing rise in political violence in the region. She expressed concern over what she described as an increasingly hostile political environment in Homa Bay, urging law enforcement authorities to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
“Ong’ondo had openly spoken about threats to his life and had even reported them to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. It is disheartening that this situation was not addressed in time,” Gogo said. “We know who did this, and we demand justice.”
She also paid tribute to the late MP, praising his commitment to public service and his consistent presence in parliamentary sessions. Gogo called on the government to intervene and prevent further bloodshed linked to local political rivalries. The murder has sparked public outcry, with many calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
