The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the local community are grieving the tragic loss of Officer Sammy Ngaah, who died during an anti-poaching operation in Marsabit County.

The dedicated officer drowned after accidentally stepping into a hidden swamp while pursuing suspected poachers near a lake.

According to a family friend, Sammy was actively chasing the suspects when the ground beneath him collapsed. What appeared to be solid terrain turned out to be a dangerous swamp, trapping him underwater. Despite efforts to rescue him, he tragically did not survive.

Sammy was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation and his passion for local sports.

Colleagues remember him as a brave and diligent officer who risked his life to protect Kenya’s endangered species.

Close friends, including Philip Etale, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Director of Communications, describe Sammy as a courageous and selfless officer who dedicated his life to protecting Kenya’s wildlife.

Sammy’s legacy as a protector of wildlife and a beloved community member will live on, inspiring others to continue the fight against illegal poaching.

His death underscores the dangers faced daily by wildlife rangers, whose work often places them in life-threatening situations to protect endangered species from illegal hunting.
