As preparations for the final farewell to Pope Francis continue Vatican officials have revealed that a set of specially minted coins will be placed inside his coffin before it is sealed on Friday evening.

The inclusion of coins is a long-standing tradition in Catholic papal burials steeped in symbolism and historical significance.

According to church customs the coins known as papal medals represent each year of the Pope’s reign.

For Pope Francis who led the Catholic Church from 2013 until his passing twelve coins will be included to mark his twelve years of service. Each coin bears the image of the Pope and important events from each year of his papacy.

Vatican spokesperson Monsignor Arturo Rossi explained that the coins serve as a historical record and tribute to the Pope’s legacy.

“They are a symbolic way of preserving the memory of his spiritual leadership and commitment to the Church,” he said.

In addition to the coins the coffin will also contain a Rogito a scroll detailing Pope Francis’ life, achievements and key moments of his pontificate.

The ceremony is expected to draw millions of viewers globally as the world bids farewell to one of the most influential and compassionate spiritual leaders of modern times.
