collapse

Several motorists in Murang’a town are counting losses after a perimeter wall collapsed on their parked vehicles following heavy rainfall in the area.

The incident occurred outside a storey-building, where multiple personal cars were severely damaged by the falling concrete structure.

Eyewitnesses reported that the impact left vehicles with smashed windows, dented bodies, and shattered rear windshields. While no injuries were reported, the financial loss to the car owners is significant.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether other properties within the compound were also affected.

Experts suggest that such collapses are often linked to poor drainage or weak structural engineering. When heavy rains occur, water accumulates around foundations and retaining walls, increasing hydrostatic pressure. Over time, this weakens the structure, leading to potential failure.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had previously warned of increased rainfall, raising concerns over similar incidents in flood-prone areas.

As the rainy season continues, property owners are urged to inspect perimeter walls and drainage systems to mitigate risks.
