Onesmus Ngogoyo, MP for Kajiado North, has criticized the ongoing process of selecting the next Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, questioning the credibility and impartiality of the selection panel.

According to Ngogoyo, the panelists involved in the process are politically biased, raising concerns about whether a genuine and competent leader will be appointed to oversee election matters.

Ngogoyo argues that the shortlisting process already indicates a predetermined outcome, making it clear which direction the selection is headed.

His concerns come after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party joined President William Ruto’s broad-based government, despite ODM having played a role in forming the selection panel.

He suggests that this development casts further doubt on the neutrality of the process.

The IEBC plays a critical role in managing elections, and any perception of bias in its leadership selection could undermine public trust in the electoral process.

Kenya has experienced election-related disputes in the past, some leading to political instability and violence.

A transparent selection process is crucial to ensuring confidence in the commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

Ngogoyo’s remarks highlight the broader issue of political influence in Kenya’s independent institutions.

If the next IEBC chairman is appointed based on political affiliations rather than qualifications and integrity, the credibility of future elections could be compromised.

This could lead to a lack of confidence in election results and potential disputes that may destabilize the country.

For the IEBC to maintain its independence, the selection process must be conducted fairly and without political interference.

Stakeholders must ensure that the appointed chairman is neutral, competent, and committed to upholding the democratic process to safeguard Kenya’s electoral integrity.
