Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Kenya’s electoral history. He is survived by his wife, Mary Wanyonyi, and their children, who now mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father.

Chebukati and his wife shared a strong bond, enjoying quality time together, particularly on the golf course. Their relationship was built on mutual support, with Wanyonyi carving her own path as a respected public servant. She currently holds a prominent government position, having been appointed by President William Ruto.

Throughout his six-year tenure as IEBC chair, Chebukati played a crucial role in overseeing Kenya’s electoral process, presiding over the 2017 and 2022 general elections. Despite the challenges that came with his position, he remained steadfast in upholding the rule of law and ensuring electoral integrity. His leadership was both praised and scrutinized, but his commitment to democracy remained unwavering.

Beyond his public service, Chebukati was a man of intellect and principle. He pursued law at the University of Nairobi and later obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He was also a member of the Law Society of Kenya and founded a law firm in Nairobi before transitioning into electoral leadership.

His passing has left a void in Kenya’s political and legal landscape, with many leaders paying tribute to his dedication and service. As the nation mourns, his legacy as a devoted leader, husband, and father will be remembered for years to come.
