Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended his condolences to the family of the late Nakuru-based human rights activist Richard Otieno, who was tragically murdered. Through his lawyer, Dan Mwangi, Uhuru expressed his grief and pledged support to Otieno’s bereaved family. Speaking during the memorial service on Wednesday, February 5, Mwangi conveyed Uhuru’s heartfelt message, emphasizing the former president’s sorrow upon learning of Otieno’s brutal killing. Uhuru, deeply moved by the activist’s tragic demise, donated KSh 500,000 to assist his widow and children during this difficult time.
“Uhuru Kenyatta sent me to represent him. When Richard was killed, I informed him of our history together, and he was deeply saddened. He was very unhappy that Richard was brutally murdered, leaving behind a young family. He sympathizes greatly with you,” Mwangi said. He further assured the grieving family that the funds would be used responsibly to support Otieno’s widow and children, honoring the activist’s legacy of fighting for justice and accountability. Mwangi, who worked closely with Otieno in past political engagements, reminisced about their collaborations during the 2017 and 2022 elections, as well as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) debates. He described Otieno as a passionate activist who dedicated his life to advocating for democracy and human rights.
Calling for justice, Mwangi urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the activist’s murder. He emphasized the need to hold those responsible accountable, including individuals who may have financed the attack. The tragic loss of Richard Otieno has left a significant void in the human rights community, with many calling for swift action to ensure justice is served.
