Bomet County Governor Hillary Barchok has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over his alleged involvement in a multi-billion shilling graft scandal. The arrest is part of a broader investigation into the theft of public funds and conflict of interest. Barchok, who is affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, is accused of being at the center of a Ksh 1.45 billion corruption case involving various county officials and contractors.
According to EACC spokesperson, Ngumbi, Governor Barchok is set to record a statement in connection with the ongoing investigation. The charges against him are related to the illegal misappropriation of funds intended for public development, a matter that has sparked outrage among the residents of Bomet County.
As part of the probe, eight county officials and two contractors have also been arrested. These individuals are alleged to have played significant roles in facilitating the embezzlement and mismanagement of public resources under Barchok’s administration. The EACC is working to unravel the full extent of the corruption network, with a focus on recovering the stolen funds and ensuring accountability for all those involved.
Governor Barchok’s arrest is seen as a significant step in the fight against corruption within local government administrations. As the case develops, residents of Bomet County are hopeful that the legal system will bring justice to those who have been deprived of essential public services due to the alleged theft of funds.
The EACC’s ongoing investigation sends a clear message that corruption in public office will not be tolerated. The agency has pledged to continue its efforts to combat graft at all levels of government, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of corruption.
Governor Barchok and the other arrested individuals will soon appear in court to face charges related to the corruption scheme, with many awaiting further details of the case.
