The High Court has issued summons to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, compelling them to appear in court on January 8, 2025.The summons comes after six Kenyans were allegedly abducted under unclear circumstances and remain unaccounted for.
Justice Lydia Achode directed the two top security officials to explain why the individuals have not been located or released, despite mounting public outcry and petitions from human rights groups.
The continued disappearance of these citizens raises serious concerns about the conduct of law enforcement and the Ministry of Interior. This court demands a comprehensive report on their whereabouts,” Justice Achode stated during the ruling.
The six individuals, who were reportedly taken by unknown persons in late November, have not been seen or heard from since. Families of the victims claim they were targeted for their involvement in protests against recent government policies.
Murkomen and Koome are now under pressure to account for the missing individuals, as calls for justice grow louder across the country. Civil society organizations have decried the incident as a violation of basic rights and are urging the government to uphold the rule of law.
In response to the summons, CS Murkomen acknowledged the court’s directive, stating, “We respect the judiciary and will provide the necessary information. Investigations are ongoing.”
The court session on January 8 is expected to shed light on the case and potentially provide a path toward resolution for the affected families.
