The Ministry of Interior, through Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo, dismissed allegations made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua accusing the government of distributing illicit alcohol in the Mt Kenya region. Omollo described Gachagua’s claims as politically motivated and inflammatory, emphasizing that such remarks trivialize a critical national issue.
PS Omollo clarified that the government does not produce, distribute, or sell alcoholic beverages and noted that substance abuse is a widespread challenge affecting people across all demographics, including families and children. He emphasized that the matter should not be sensationalized or politicized.
The PS criticized Gachagua for making such allegations during a church event, arguing that his statements lacked empathy for the families affected by substance abuse. Omollo described the remarks as disingenuous and accused Gachagua of acting in bad faith despite having previously held a senior government position.
Omollo urged Gachagua to follow due process by filing a formal complaint and presenting any evidence he might have to the relevant investigative or enforcement authorities. This, he argued, would be a more constructive way of addressing the issue rather than making unverified public accusations.
The Ministry also called on parents to remain vigilant and protect their children from harmful substances, particularly during the festive season. Omollo highlighted the role of families and communities in combating substance misuse and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals.
Addressing the media, PS Omollo reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of illicit alcohol and substance abuse, while calling for collective action to tackle the problem effectively. He emphasized the need for a united approach devoid of political rhetoric.
The PS’s remarks come amid rising tensions and debates on the role of government policies in addressing the proliferation of illicit alcohol, with Gachagua accusing President William Ruto’s administration of undermining Mt Kenya residents through such activities. However, Omollo firmly dismissed these claims as baseless.
