Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is facing growing concerns about his qualifications to hold office, months after his swearing-in. Critics have pointed fingers at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for allegedly clearing him without thorough scrutiny.

Dr. Ekuru Aukot who is a former presidential candidate is among the vocal leaders who have questioned the IEBC’s credibility. He highlighted the inconsistency of the commission in handling key responsibilities such as its failure to organize by-elections in several constituencies across the country while managing to approve Kindiki’s candidacy.

Aukot stated that there was a potential flaw in Kindiki’s vetting process and that he is not legally allowed to hold the office as the second in command. The IEBC, led by CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan, has also been accused of failing to uphold public confidence. Aukot argued that if Marjan could clear Kindiki, he should be equally capable of preparing for pending elections.

This raises broader concerns about the commission’s efficiency and impartiality. These doubts cast a shadow on Kindiki’s leadership as questions about his capacity and the process that enabled his rise continue to gain momentum and dominate public discussions. The issue has further fueled calls for reforms within the IEBC to address its alleged shortcomings.

For DP Kindiki, the criticisms come as a new political challenge with pressure mounting to prove his ability to lead effectively. Whether these concerns will affect his position remains uncertain but they have added a new layer of scrutiny to his tenure as Deputy President.

“Dr. Ekuru Aukot: Prof Kithure Kindiki was allegedly cleared by an IEBC. The question that is lingering on the minds of Kenyans today, which is that IEBC that cleared Kindiki which cannot on the same note hold elections in all these wards and constituencies? If Marjan who is the CEO then cleared Kindiki as IEBC, then why can’t he prepare for these elections?” Citizen TV reports.
