A segment of Kenyans online has voiced displeasure with Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah after he criticized Catholic bishops for raising concerns about President William Ruto’s government. On November 14, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops held a press conference accusing the administration of promoting dishonesty and advancing harmful legislative agendas. They further alleged that certain lawmakers were engaging in corrupt activities.

In response, Ichung’wah, who is also the National Assembly Majority Leader, took to social media, calling the bishops’ statements misleading and politically motivated. “Dear Catholic Bishops, let us all be honest. If you have any information on corrupt legislators, please furnish it to investigating agencies or just name and shame them,” he wrote on X.

His remarks stirred a backlash from Kenyans, who argued that with opposition sidelined, Parliament allegedly compromised, and the Judiciary seemingly aligned with Ruto, the bishops’ critique was a refreshing voice of accountability. Some noted that Parliament is widely viewed as corrupt, with only a few, such as Senators Omatatah and Onyoka, seen as exceptions.

Kenyans also criticized MPs’ high salaries, urging Ichung’wah to accept constructive criticism. Others pointed out the bishops’ prior meeting with President Ruto, questioning its motivations.
