Career civil servants stationed at the Office of the Deputy President were finally allowed back to work yesterday, a day after being turned away at the gates, as reported on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

On Wednesday morning, civil servants reported to the office only to be instructed to leave. They were told they would be informed when to resume their duties.

However, later in the day, they were summoned back, with employees from key departments such as Finance and Human Resources expected to process October salaries.

“The staff were initially turned away when they arrived for work in the morning but were allowed back later in the day,” revealed one employee from the DP’s office.

This development came as a three-judge bench ruled that it would not recuse itself from a case challenging the appointment of Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as the replacement for impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Earlier, on Tuesday, some staff members had been blocked from accessing the Harambee House Annex and the Karen offices by police officers from the Rapid Deployment Unit stationed at both premises.

Despite their pleas to collect personal belongings, officers did not allow them entry.

Some civil servants complained about the dismissal, terming it unprocedural since no formal written communication had been issued. They also expressed concern about their salaries, questioning whether they would receive their pay for October.

“We expected communication in writing, but none has been issued,” one staffer lamented, fearing for their financial security.
