Political tensions in the restive Mt Kenya region escalated on Monday as Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, calling him a condescending activist.
Mr. Kiunjuri, emphasizing that unity in the region must be built on mutual respect, was responding to comments made by the Deputy President during his visit to Kirinyaga County on May 19.
Nevertheless, Kikuyu Council of Elders patron Mr. Kung’u Muigai criticized the disputes among leaders in the region, describing them as “shameful and regrettable.”
Over the weekend, Mr. Gachagua accused some of President Ruto’s close allies of being arrogant and fostering division in the Mt Kenya region.
Responding on Kameme TV, Mr. Kiunjuri argued that Mr. Gachagua is the true source of his political troubles, both regionally and nationally, due to his condescending attitude that expects everyone to submit to him like school children.
“We cannot go around dismissing elected leaders as traitors, collaborators, and worthless, then claim to be uniting people,” Mr. Kiunjuri asserted.
He noted that Mt Kenya holds a 47 percent stake in President Ruto’s government. Instead of leveraging this significant influence to benefit the local population, he said that those appointed are embroiled in conflicts driven solely by greed.
He said “Mt Kenya has 47 percent stake in the President Ruto government but instead of appreciating and using it to help area people, those appointed into it are busy tearing into each other for reasons exclusively limited to greed”.
