William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto was born on December 21, 1966, in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu County, to Mr. and Mrs. Cheruiyot. He began his education at Kamagut Primary School, then attended Wareng Secondary School for his O-levels, and completed his A-levels at Kapsabet Boys.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and Zoology from the University of Nairobi in 1990, later pursuing an MSc in Plant Ecology, graduating in 2011, and a Ph.D. from the same university in 2018.
Ethnic loyalties are significant in Kenyan politics, and Ruto hails from the Kalenjin, the country’s third-largest ethnic group. He is now regarded as the political kingpin of his community, which previously produced Kenya’s longest-serving president, the late Daniel Arap Moi.
Ruto is married to Rachael, whom he met during church youth meetings. They have six children, including their son Nick, who was once blessed by Kalenjin elders, sparking speculation about his political future, and their daughter June, who works in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
While his siblings have stayed out of the political spotlight, his brother David Samoei Ruto played a role in William Ruto’s presidential campaign. David grew up in Uasin Gishu County and recalls the challenges of their childhood, including a lack of money for basic needs like school shoes.
David Samoei Ruto is an accomplished business leader with over two decades of experience in various industries, including manufacturing, retail, professional services, and IT. He is the founder and chairman of Kirongosi Group, where he oversees project development and works with government entities at multiple levels. David earned his bachelor’s degree in Business and Management Information Systems from Indiana State University in the USA.
