Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has suffered a major political blow in his stronghold of Mt. Kenya after 14 MPs endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their spokesperson.
The MPs, from Tharaka Nithi, Embu, and Meru counties located in the Mt. Kenya East region, have now politically divided the broader Mt. Kenya area, especially concerning political succession.
Speaking to the press after a closed-door meeting at Isaak Walton’s restaurant in Embu, the 14 MPs announced on Monday that Professor Kindiki would be the liaison between President William Ruto’s government and the Mt. Kenya East region.
This means that Professor Kindiki is being pushed to undermine Gachagua’s ambition to politically unify the broader Mt. Kenya region, which includes a total of 10 counties along with Nakuru County in the Rift Valley.
“We have unanimously agreed that the intermediary between us and the government is Professor Kindiki, and the Mt. Kenya East region is rising,” said the North Imenti MP, who read the statement on behalf of his colleagues.
The MPs stated that they have united to advocate for development in the Mt. Kenya region and pledged not to rest.
They said there is a need for collaboration with the government to expedite development agendas in Mt. Kenya East.
“We are confident that through cooperation and dialogue with the government, the Mt. Kenya East region will be placed on the national development agenda,” they said.
“This meeting was a significant step in bringing together joint efforts to promote prosperity for the benefit of our people in the Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Meru counties,” they added.
Other MPs who attended the meeting included Nebart Muriuki (South Imenti), Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East), Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), Dan Kiiri (Igembe Central), John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South), Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri), Julius Taitumu (Igembe North), Munene Parto (Chuka Igamba Ng’ombe), John Kanyuithia (Tigania West), and Kareke Mbiuki (Maara).
Others present were Njoki Njeru (Embu Woman Representative), Elizabeth Kailemia (Meru Woman Representative), and Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi.
