Hellen Muthoni, known as Msoo, is recognized as both a TV presenter and a gospel singer. Her prominence rose through hosting the Inooro show Rurumeke, a program aired every Sunday.
Her presence on the show resonated deeply with viewers, earning admiration and affection, particularly from audiences in the Mt Kenya region. Msoo’s journey, as recounted by WoK, unveils a tale of resilience and perseverance amidst adversity.
Background and Family Struggles
Born in 1989 into a family of four children, Msoo experienced a life of abundance during her early years. Residing in Matimbei village, Kiambu county, her family’s circumstances drastically altered following the tragic loss of her father in the August 1998 bomb blast.
In an interview with Kikuyu Diaspora TV, Msoo reminisced about their affluent lifestyle, where even teachers hesitated to reprimand them. However, after her father’s demise, they were forced to vacate their home, relocating to her grandmother’s modest dwelling, a far cry from their former comfort.
Amidst her mother’s battle with depression, her grandmother shouldered the responsibility of caring for them. Msoo, despite her young age, took on the role of nurturing her younger brother, adapting to a life filled with hardship and uncertainty.
School life presented its own challenges, as Msoo and her siblings faced ridicule from peers familiar with their previous affluence. Despite the upheavals, Msoo pursued her education, attending Matimbei Primary school until Grade 5 before continuing her studies in Limuru. With the assistance of her brother-in-law, a doctor, she completed her high school education at St. Luke’s High School.
Career Pursuits
Post-education, Msoo pursued her passion for acting, honing her craft with production companies such as Johari and Fanaka, primarily as a Kikuyu actor. Her linguistic versatility was evident as she translated English scripts into Kikuyu.
Transitioning to radio, Msoo served as a voiceover artist for Kameme FM before landing her breakthrough role on Inooro TV. Hosting the gospel show for seven years, Msoo became a beloved figure among viewers until her departure announcement on Sunday, September 12, 2023, marking the end of an era.
Musical Endeavors
Msoo’s musical journey began humbly, composing her first song while engaged in household chores at her sister’s residence. She acknowledges Paul Mwai and James Wanyoike as influential mentors in her musical odyssey.
One of her notable songs, “Ndimugure” (I am redeemed), was a collaborative effort with Mercy Masika, further solidifying her footprint in the gospel music scene.
