Former President Mwai Kibaki’s son, Jimmy Kibaki, has announced his retirement from active politics after serving as the deputy leader of The New Democrats Party for three years.

In a statement released through Kenyans.co.ke, Jimmy cited pressing family and business commitments as the primary reasons for his decision to step down from his political role.

Having been deeply involved in politics for over three decades, Jimmy expressed gratitude for his extensive political journey, which included participation in various political initiatives and the formation of multiple political parties.

Reflecting on his political career, Jimmy highlighted his involvement in the Democratic Party of Kenya in 1991, where he played a pivotal role in its growth and success during the 1992 and 1997 general elections. He later transitioned to the National Alliance Party of Kenya, which merged with the Liberal Democratic Party to form the National Rainbow Coalition in 2002, ultimately leading to his father’s presidency.

Jimmy also noted his contributions to the Party of National Unity and, most recently, The New Democrats, where he served as the deputy party leader.

The 60-year-old acknowledged the legacy of his late father, President Mwai Kibaki, and his significant impact on Kenyan politics. Following his father’s passing in 2022, Jimmy had hinted at the possibility of pursuing political ambitions but has now decided to prioritize familial and business obligations.

While Jimmy’s departure marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics, it also underscores the importance of personal and professional commitments beyond the realm of politics. As he bids farewell to his political career, Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service to the nation, paving the way for new leadership and opportunities in Kenya’s ever-evolving political landscape.
