A 35-year-old man, Hamis Kulwa, has been arrested by Tabora regional police for allegedly slaughtering his pregnant wife, removing the twins from her womb, cooking and eating one while burying the other two infants.

According to media reports from Tanzania, Regional Police Commander, ACP Richard Abwao said the shocking incident happened on January 30th in Uyogo ward, Urambo district.

He added that the accused claimed he killed his wife and twins over superstitious beliefs.

“During interrogations, he alleged that he was told some people had been sent to take his wife and children to Gambushi [an area in Simiyu region notorious for dark forces] to do witchcraft work at night.

“He feared they would soon take and kill them, so he decided to kill them himself,” the commander revealed.

ACP Abwao said after slicing open his wife’s womb, the suspect removed the twins, cooked, and ate one while burying the other infant and his 2-year-old sibling.

Police said investigations are still ongoing and once completed, the accused will be arraigned in court to answer murder charges.

The bizarre incident has left residents of Uyogo ward in shock over the gruesome murders stemming from retrogressive beliefs.

Authorities are calling upon the public to report suspicious activities and reject harmful cultural practices that lead to loss of life.

Counselling has been provided to relatives of the deceased wife as police pursue justice over the horrific triple homicide.
