He was one of the top brains in former President Mwai Kibaki’s first term in office. Widely regarded as a top performer, Henry Obwocha served as West Mugirango MP for almost two decades from 1992 until his downfall in 2007.
Obwocha burst into the spotlight in the 1980s when he became a key member in the fight for multiparty democracy. But his quest for an MP seat in 1988 backfired in his first attempt at elective politics. He eventually won the seat in 1992 on a Ford Kenya party ticket.
After one decade in the opposition backbench role, he eventually made it to the cabinet in 2005 when he was appointed as Planning cabinet minister to succeed the fired Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o.
Considered as one of the top brains in the Narc cabinet, Obwocha was a holder of Masters degree from the prestigious Oxford University.
Obwocha was one of the top brains behind the Kenyan economic blueprint, the Vision 2030. And for this reason, he was a key member of the Kibaki inner circle.
In 2015, after spending almost seven years in the cold, he was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the chairman of the Privatization Commission.
But three years later, in 2018, the country was greeted by the news of the former minister’s sudden death he collapsed and died.
The former minister was just from attending his sister-in-law’s funeral.
It would later emerge that Obwocha had survived for 18 years on a donated kidney.
