President Ruto’s visit to Kirinyaga to inaugurate the Kirinyaga Referral Hospital was a significant event for the county. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Governors Anne Waiguru and Johnston Sakaja, as well as Health CS Susan Nakhumicha. The presence of these esteemed individuals emphasized the importance of the occasion and demonstrated the commitment of the government to improving healthcare services in the region.
During her speech, Governor Anne Waiguru expressed her gratitude for the progress made in the health sector under her administration’s leadership. She highlighted the county’s transformation and the efforts taken to enhance healthcare services for the people of Kirinyaga. However, she also acknowledged the existing challenges, such as the limited capacity of the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) nurses.
Governor Waiguru pointed out that despite the hospital’s recent developments, the ICU had only one critical care nurse, whereas the minimum requirement is 15. Recognizing the urgency and importance of this matter, the county administration has already initiated steps to address the issue. In the upcoming financial year, they have included a budget allocation to recruit additional critical care nurses and improve the capacity of the ICU.
In light of these circumstances, Governor Waiguru humbly requested further support, particularly from President Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua. She acknowledged their reputation for generosity and expressed her confidence that they would consider assisting the county. Governor Waiguru emphasized that even a small contribution from President Ruto would be highly appreciated and would significantly contribute to the smooth operation of the hospital.
