The scandal first erupted after one of President William Ruto’s cabinet secretaries was involved in a fake/dubious multimillion shillings scam in which hundreds of young job seekers were unsuspectingly defrauded.
The case involved fake recruitment agencies in Eldoret, Canada, Qatar and Poland that promised a total of two thousand jobs to Kenyan youth. After collecting money from the youth to facilitate travel and other activities, the agency went silent.
An unnamed cabinet secretary, a top businessman and senior politician in Eldoret, has been linked to the scandal. According to the victims, the Cabinet Secretary attended the launch of the recruitment program last year and was one of the people who encouraged the youth to pay the necessary fees to get a job.
“We have reason to believe that millions of people know about the scam,” said Pauline Abaka, a victim of the scam.
Victims of this fraud had organized a peaceful demonstration in Eldoret town, but the police stopped it. They vowed to continue the demonstration as they called on the Cabinet Secretary to come forward and highlight what they knew about the scam.
