A social media post by commentator Dennis Itumbi claims The Equitable Party (TEP) is about to announce a new leadership structure.
It names Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as party leader, former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza as first deputy leader and a “Patrick” as second deputy.
The post is cut off so the rest of the line-up is unclear. The claim comes from unnamed sources and has not been confirmed.
Part of it does match the public record. Sifuna was declared TEP party leader and presidential candidate at the party’s launch in Nairobi and the launch took place on Sunday, October 4.
The party adopted the slogan Tusawazishe. It was not built from scratch: TEP was registered on March 25, 2022 and its founding leadership agreed to make way for Sifuna and his allies.
Mwangaza’s name also fits the picture. She was among the allies present when the Linda Mwananchi movement named Sifuna its leader and presidential candidate.
However, she has her own political vehicle. She was named leader of the Umoja na Maendeleo Party and parties linked to her and others could join a future coalition. That makes a deputy role in TEP a plausible but unconfirmed arrangement.
The party faces political pressure. President William Ruto has mocked TEP as an “empty party” with no substantive agenda. Sifuna has said that if more hurdles block the rebranding, his team would keep the TEP identity and contest the 2027 election.
Until TEP issues its own statement, the deputy positions remain unverified. Readers should treat the names as unconfirmed and wait for an official announcement.
