Shock and grief have engulfed Kiamaina village in Kirinyaga County following the tragic murder of Mary Njoki Muchemi and her two young daughters in the United States.
Njoki, a 49-year-old alumnus of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), was shot dead alongside her daughters, Andrianna (17) and Brianna (11), inside their home in Valley Station, Louisville, Kentucky. Police confirmed that her 60-year-old American husband, Gary Stanton, committed the murder-suicide on December 3, 2022.
The horrific incident came just weeks after the family visited Kirinyaga for her father’s burial, where Gary appeared supportive and deeply caring. “He acted like a model husband, and everything seemed perfect,” recalled Njoki’s brother, Moses, left in disbelief over the sudden loss.
Former university classmates and the Kenyan diaspora in the US expressed immense sadness over losing a vibrant leader and her innocent children. A solemn memorial service was held in Louisville on December 28, 2022, as relatives gathered to bid them a tearful farewell.
