National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah faced heckling in Parliament after making remarks perceived as a direct attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his political allies.
The commotion erupted after Ichung’wah responded to Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, who had alleged that Ndia MP George Kariuki, popularly known as GK, was campaigning for the deputy presidency ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Ichung’wah defended Kariuki’s political ambitions, arguing that there was nothing wrong with leaders aspiring to higher positions.
However, his remarks took a sharp turn when he criticised MPs who, he said, abandoned their judgment to follow a leader incapable of taking them anywhere politically.
“It is only wrong when members of Parliament who are elected by their people abandon their heads, their brains, and follow another man who cannot be anything and who cannot take them anywhere,” Ichung’wah told the House.
His comments triggered angry reactions from opposition-affiliated MPs, who interrupted him with chants of “Wacha ujinga” and “Use your brain.”
Although Ichung’wah did not mention Gachagua by name, his remarks were widely interpreted as targeting the former deputy president.
The heckling intensified as Ichung’wah attempted to continue speaking, with the noise disrupting his address.
The incident highlights growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly over the contest for the Mt Kenya region’s political support.
