A new political wave was witnessed in Lamu Town as supporters associated with the “Wantam” movement took to the streets following President William Ruto’s departure from the coastal region.

The activity came at a time when supporters of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the wider Linda Mwananchi movement were celebrating a major development concerning their political party.

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal recently overturned the Registrar of Political Parties’ decision that had rejected the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement name. The Registrar was directed to reconsider the application and communicate the decision within seven days.

The development has been viewed by Sifuna’s allies as an important step towards establishing a formal political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In Lamu, supporters used the moment to express their enthusiasm for the emerging political formation, with the Wantam slogan once again featuring prominently among sections of the crowd.

The slogan has increasingly become associated with calls for President Ruto to serve only one term. Analysts have linked its growing visibility to dissatisfaction among sections of young voters and opposition supporters.

Sifuna has already been endorsed by Linda Mwananchi leaders as their presidential candidate, while the movement continues working on its political structure and possible alliances.

The Nairobi senator and his allies have been touring different parts of the country as they seek to build a national network ahead of the next election.

Lamu has also featured in the movement’s recent activities. Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino previously met in the county during a Linda Mwananchi retreat, where they presented a united front amid speculation surrounding their political partnership.

With political activity expected to intensify, the scenes witnessed in Lamu signal another chapter in the unfolding 2027 contest.
