A Kenyan woman who won the US Diversity Visa Lottery says she told almost no one about it until she had the visa physically in her hands.
Emily Ann shared the details in a Facebook post on Friday, September 25, 2026. She said only a small circle of close friends and family knew about her win in the months before the visa was issued.
Once it was secured, she announced the news to her extended family and wider circle of friends. Her post drew attention online after she described a funny exchange with her mother.
The mother had asked to take the visa to church so the pastor could see it and pray over it. Emily responded by asking her to hide the document the way she used to hide sugary sweets and cookies from the children.
She added that nobody should see or touch the important paper. She later said her mother now understands why the visa needed to be protected.
Emily also said she believes God has already blessed both the visa and her upcoming trip, so the caution was about looking after what she has received rather than fear.
Beyond the humour, she used the post to offer advice to her followers. She wrote that not every plan or blessing needs to be announced before it happens.
According to her, quietly praying over your plans and protecting your blessings is sometimes the wisest approach, because not everyone who hears good news is truly happy for you.
She then challenged her followers to say whether they would shout their wins from the rooftops or let results speak for themselves.
Joking about the future, she said that if she ever buys a private jet, the news will be kept even more secret.
