A Kenyan student captured the attention of former President Uhuru Kenyatta after delivering a hilarious performance during the 2013 Kenya Schools, Colleges and Universities Drama Festivals winners concert.
Daniel Owira, who was then a Form Two student at Highway Secondary School, performed a narrative titled “Otonglo Time” at State House in Mombasa. His entertaining performance reportedly left Uhuru laughing and impressed by the young student’s talent.
Following the memorable performance, Uhuru supported Owira’s education by helping pay his school fees and living expenses. Owira also received a scholarship from the Kenyatta Trust, which supported his education through university.
The assistance significantly changed Owira’s educational journey. He completed his secondary education and later joined Multimedia University, graduating in December 2020 with a degree in Journalism and Media Studies, specialising in Film and Animation.
The story of the young comedian’s performance at the drama festival remains notable because a schoolboy’s talent earned him education support from the former president.
