The State Department for Roads has provided an update on the ongoing construction of the Rironi–Mau Summit Road, saying works remain on schedule as the government targets completion of the wider corridor by June 2027.The department said on Wednesday that construction is progressing steadily on the major Northern Corridor route, which is being upgraded to improve transport efficiency, road safety and movement of goods and passengers.
The project, launched in November 2025, covers the wider Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit corridor and involves work on both the Rironi–Gilgil and Gilgil–Mau Summit sections.
The construction is being undertaken from different fronts to accelerate delivery.
Recent updates indicate that the Rironi–Naivasha section is also advancing, with Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir saying it is expected to be completed and opened to traffic by October 30, 2026.
He maintained that the entire corridor is targeted for completion by June 2027.
The contractor had earlier indicated that tarmacking of the Rironi–Naivasha stretch was expected to begin showing significant progress by December, following ongoing earthworks and construction of major structures.
Expanded highway is expected to ease congestion along one of Kenya’s busiest transport routes, which connects Nairobi with the Rift Valley & western parts of the country.The project will include additional lanes, interchanges and other road infrastructure intended to improve traffic flow and safety.
The State Department for Roads said the government remains committed to delivering the project within the stated timeline.
Once completed, the upgraded corridor is expected to improve travel efficiency while supporting trade and transportation along the Northern Corridor.
