Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is increasingly attracting attention in Kenya’s political scene as he seeks to connect with young voters angered by political violence, corruption and governance concerns ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The 44-year-old politician has gained visibility through nationwide political tours and public rallies, drawing significant crowds despite not having formally declared his intention to run for president.
His growing profile has placed him among several opposition figures positioning themselves ahead of the next election.
Sifuna first built considerable goodwill among many young Kenyans during the June 2024 protests, when he was involved in efforts to prevent police violence against demonstrators.
His engagement with issues raised by the younger generation has since remained an important part of his political profile.
The former lawyer has also emerged as a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration. He has accused the government of failing to uphold the rule of law, democracy and freedom, while questioning its handling of political dissent.
His rising popularity, however, has also attracted opposition. Political analyst Javas Bigambo told AFP that Sifuna has yet to establish himself as a fully defined presidential contender, pointing to his limited political experience and the absence of a clearly articulated policy agenda.
Sifuna has served one term as Nairobi senator and previously held the position of ODM secretary-general.
His political activities have intensified as Kenya approaches the August 2027 elections, although the opposition field remains crowded and no single challenger has emerged as the clear alternative to Ruto.
Sifuna has said he is working with experts to develop a manifesto, suggesting that his political agenda could become clearer as the 2027 contest takes shape.
For now, his growing visibility among younger voters has made him one of the politicians attracting attention in Kenya’s evolving opposition landscape.
