ruto appointees

Dr. James Mworia has been appointed as the founding Chief Executive Officer of the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF), taking charge of a newly established institution expected to play a significant role in Kenya’s infrastructure financing and development agenda.

Mworia’s appointment takes effect on September 7, 2026, placing him at the centre of efforts to establish the fund’s operations, develop its strategic direction and build partnerships to support major infrastructure projects across the country.

As the first person to occupy the position, Mworia will have the responsibility of laying the institutional foundation of the NIF. His duties are expected to include developing systems and operational frameworks, strengthening financial management structures and identifying opportunities for investment in infrastructure projects capable of delivering long-term economic and social benefits.

The appointment has generated interest among Kenyans and stakeholders in the business and investment sectors, with many closely following discussions surrounding the new fund and its leadership. A recent Facebook post announcing Mworia’s appointment attracted reactions from members of the public, with some highlighting his experience while others expressed expectations about what the institution could achieve.

Mworia is widely recognised for his experience in business leadership and investment management. His background is expected to be valuable as the NIF seeks to establish strong corporate governance practices, sound financial planning and effective investment strategies.

The National Infrastructure Fund is expected to help mobilise additional resources for infrastructure development while opening opportunities for investment in major projects. Its performance will, however, depend heavily on transparency, accountability, prudent financial management and its ability to ensure that investments deliver measurable value to citizens.

Mworia’s appointment comes as infrastructure remains a key priority for the government, which is exploring alternative and innovative approaches to financing development projects beyond traditional sources of funding.

As the founding CEO, Mworia now faces the task of turning the fund’s mandate into a functioning institution and positioning it to contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s infrastructure needs and wider economic growth.
