Jamila Mohamed never set out to become a journalist. In fact, when she first walked into IQRA FM in 2000, she was hoping to get a job in sales.
However, an unexpected turn of events changed the direction of her life.
The scheduled newsreader failed to turn up, leaving the station in need of someone to deliver the news bulletin. Jamila was asked to step in and read the news.
She accepted the challenge, unaware that the opportunity would mark the beginning of a journalism career spanning more than two decades.
Jamila went on to build a name for herself in Kenya’s media industry, eventually rising from a junior reporter to a senior editorial position.
She spent 16 years at NTV, where she steadily climbed the ranks before becoming the station’s managing editor.
Her career journey also unfolded alongside her responsibilities as a mother of five. Despite the demands of work and family, Jamila continued with her education.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media Studies before pursuing a Master’s degree in International Conflict Management at the University of Nairobi.
Jamila later joined Citizen TV, where she became one of the familiar faces on prime-time news. She also became a co-host of the Thursday current affairs programme News Gang.
Beyond her professional achievements, Jamila’s early life was marked by the loss of her father when she was only eight years old.
