Evelyn Chemutai Ruto has once again attracted public interest following her appearance at a recent family ceremony involving President William Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto. Her presence has given Kenyans another opportunity to see a member of the First Family who has largely remained away from public attention.
Evelyn is married to Nick Ruto, the President’s eldest son. The couple formalised their relationship through a traditional Kalenjin wedding ceremony, known as koito, held on January 15, 2022, at Windy Ridge in Karen, Nairobi. The event brought together relatives and several prominent guests.
She is the daughter of David Baron from Laikipia County. Following her marriage to Nick, reports described Evelyn as a working professional, although details concerning her occupation and employer have remained largely private.
Unlike other prominent members of the Ruto family, Evelyn has avoided extensive media exposure. She rarely speaks publicly and has generally kept information about her career, education and personal affairs away from the public domain.
Her relationship with Nick was similarly kept under wraps before their traditional wedding. The couple’s ceremony therefore came as a surprise to many Kenyans, given that Nick had not openly discussed his relationship in public.
The couple later welcomed their first child. In January 2023, President William Ruto announced that he and First Lady Rachel Ruto had become grandparents, expressing gratitude to the people of Laikipia for welcoming his son’s wife into the family.
Evelyn has since made occasional appearances at important family functions, maintaining a relatively understated public image.
Her latest appearance has also generated interest in her fashion choice. Belabkay Couture, a Nairobi-based fashion label, confirmed that it dressed Evelyn for Charlene Ruto’s koito ceremony.
Despite the growing public curiosity, much of Evelyn’s personal and professional life remains undisclosed, reinforcing her reputation as one of the more private members of Kenya’s First Family.
