Kanze Dena Mararo has built a notable career that has taken her from the television newsroom to the centre of Kenya’s presidential communication machinery.
The former news anchor became a prominent figure in retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration after joining his communication team at State House in 2018.
From newsroom to State House
Dena’s transition to State House came on June 5, 2018, when Uhuru appointed her Deputy State House Spokesperson and Deputy Head of the Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU).
Her responsibilities included overseeing areas such as digital communication, research, media relations, branding and strategic messaging from the President’s office.
Her time as deputy was brief. A few weeks later, Dena was promoted to State House Spokesperson and Head of PSCU, replacing Manoah Esipisu, who had been appointed Kenya’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
The appointment placed her at the forefront of presidential communication, making her the principal public voice of the Presidency.
In the role, Dena regularly addressed the media and communicated government policies, programmes and presidential engagements.
She remained in the position throughout Uhuru’s second and final term, becoming one of the most recognisable faces associated with his administration’s communication team.
Role after Uhuru left office
Uhuru’s departure from State House in 2022 did not mark the end of Dena’s association with the former president.
She continued working with him and currently serves as spokesperson for retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, communicating on behalf of the Office of the Fourth President.
In the role, Dena handles public communication for the former Head of State, including responding to reports, clarifying his position on public matters and issuing official statements.
Her responsibilities have included dismissing false statements attributed to Uhuru and providing updates on matters involving the retired president.
In February 2026, for instance, she communicated Uhuru’s position regarding a planned visit by a youth group to his Ichaweri home.
Her continued role means Dena has remained an important part of Uhuru’s public communication team even after his tenure as Kenya’s president ended.
Recognised for public service
Dena’s contribution to government communication was also recognised by Uhuru during the final months of his presidency.
In July 2022, the former president awarded her a national honour in recognition of her service and contribution to government communication.
From her beginnings as a television journalist to becoming the voice of the Presidency and later Uhuru’s spokesperson in retirement, Dena’s career has seen her occupy some of the most visible communication roles in Kenya’s public sector.
