As First Daughter Charlene Ruto prepares to walk down the aisle in a highly anticipated traditional wedding in Kilgoris, attention has turned to the man who will become her husband — Tanzanian tech entrepreneur Isaya Yunge, whose remarkable life story has captivated Kenyans since his traditional wedding invitation leaked online.
Yunge was recently spotted at the Forbes Africa Under 30 Meet-Up in Gauteng, South Africa, where he posed on the red carpet before a backdrop bearing the logos of Forbes Africa, Capitec and Moove, further cementing his profile as a rising African entrepreneur.
Born on March 23, 1990, in Mwanza, a lakeside city on the shores of Lake Victoria in northern Tanzania, Yunge’s early life was anything but easy. Following his parents’ divorce, he moved between foster homes and spent his early childhood herding animals instead of attending school, only joining primary education at age seven.
Rather than allowing his circumstances to define him, Yunge poured his energy into community work. While still in secondary school, he began holding informal lessons for street children and later convinced local station Radio Free Africa to give them a platform through a programme he hosted called Sauti ya Watoto Club.
The initiative caught the attention of UNICEF, which named him a UNICEF Africa Youth Ambassador. At just 17, he addressed world leaders at the G8 2007 Summit in Berlin, having been personally invited by then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Yunge’s entrepreneurial ambitions later found their clearest expression in SomaApp, a mobile application he co-founded to connect African students with scholarship opportunities. The platform has since helped more than 7,000 young people access advanced education across the continent.
His work earned him the prestigious Queen’s Young Leader Award in 2018, making him one of only two Tanzanians ever to receive the honour. That same year, Forbes named him among 40 African entrepreneurs representing the continent at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit in Boston, Massachusetts, where he spoke to CNBC Africa about opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs on the continent.
Beyond SomaApp, Yunge has gone on to found KAYA, an AI-powered smart speaker designed to collect African data, and Somafit, a smartwatch capable of monitoring blood pressure and heart rate.
His entrepreneurial credentials were further bolstered in 2017, when he won first prize at the Mobile Money Hackathon in Dar es Salaam and placed among the top three startups globally at the Start-up Turkey Award. In 2019, Avance Media recognised him among Tanzania’s 50 most influential young people.
Yunge’s engagement to Charlene Ruto has taken on added diplomatic significance, with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s involvement in the celebrations highlighting the cross-border relationships fostered through the union.
Guests have been arriving at President William Ruto’s Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris via helicopter for the traditional engagement ceremony, underscoring the scale and prominence of the event.
From herding animals in Mwanza to addressing world leaders in Berlin and now marrying into Kenya’s First Family, Yunge’s journey stands as a striking example of resilience and ambition.
